Prince Louis de Broglie ( 1892-1987; Nobel Physics 1929 ) was an original founder of modern quantum physics as a continuation of the "Photoelectric Effect" of Albert Einstein where de Broglie intimately employed Special Relativity in devising his quantum equations especially in the equivalence for energy and mass.

Naturally the question of matter itself is invoked by none other than Erwin Schrödinger ( 1887-1961, Nobel Prize-winning Austrian quantum theory physicist ):

"We no longer contrast matter with forces and field of force as different entities, we know now that these concepts have to be merged. It is true, we call a spatial region free of matter, call it empty if there is nothing but a gravitational field. But space is never really empty because even far away in the universe there is starlight, and that is matter [ ... ]"
