The Michelson-Morley Experiment of 1887 famously sets the entire experimental stage for the FitzGerald-Lorentz tentative solution of 1889 by FitzGerald, more elaborately in 1892 by Lorentz, and immediately beyond that provides the empirical foundation for Einstein's seminal 1905 paper of Special Relativity or SR.
